This set has the same tuner panel (with the single channel selector knob, and the slide-rule UHF channel indicator with the orange pointer and aqua channel numbers) as my grandparents had when our TV at home was only black-and-white, and I remember it quite well - really, really wanted a color TV in our home.

I think their set was the same as this, about the same size, though theirs may (or may not) have had some wooden decorations along the top at the front of the set.

My mom had always said that this was one of the last "roundies", and that most color TV sets were rectangular even when Grandpa bought his.

I always had assumed that this would have been a CTC-16 set as it was one of the last RCA chassis for a round tube produced in large numbers. However, I recently found a brochure for 16s online, and none of them had the tuner panel like on the set I've pictured here.

Unfortunately for me, this set is in a museum (worse, it's just sitting there, unplugged, on the floor, standing alone, and not part of any exhibit),

I don't think it's RCA made. RCA did have the same basic metal face panel, and 4 knob cluster below the tuner on the CTC-16 and CTC-20, but they also sold those metal face plates to MANY smaller firms (I can show you a Silvertone CTC-15 clone as proof) which often used their own tuners and tweaked the tuner portion of the panel (and sometimes more of the control section) to fit/make theirs look different. GE was one company that took only the face plate, Admiral sold RCA made sets with cosmetic differences until ~1963 (IIRC) then made their own color sets.

Yes that's what I meant. I have an Admiral roundie that was made in 1967 as a price leader. Was $299. All original local set and still works

EDIT: One possible clue: The VKer known as "old tv nut" has an animated avatar of a set with the same bezel, only with a "chromed" knob driving a tuner with a backlit channel indicator. The mystery RCA is likely an economy version of his set.

It's probably a CTC20. There's only three knobs under the bezel, no tone control.
RCA, as well as others, made sets for a particular customer as a short run, leader model. That model was probably the real last run of the 20's.
Ages ago, I had trouble finding a channel selector knob for an RCA. The RCA distributor had to call the factory to cross- reference the model number. The factory said, it was a special order set for a large store chain.

One is too many...

Though I have heard from multiple sources that the 6GH8 isn't a bad tube at all, it's just that RCA chose to run the snot out of it as far as ratings are concerned. Fortunately for us the 6U8(A) is a suitable sub, so I just replace with those and never had a problem. I don't keep cases of 6GH8's around the house, but I have plenty of 6U8's.

Or get Sylvania 6GH8 tubes. RCA started using them later since their own manufactured 6GH8 tubes were not up to the challenge... or so I have heard. (You know, hearsay...)

I've seen some made by Westinghouse and GE. OEM, white printing.
