I am trying to help a co worker out with his mother's tv. It is a flat screen and as soon as he gives me the info as far as make\model i will pass it along if need be.
The set in question has a black line towards the bottom that goes completely across the screen and also a pink line up and down towards the left side.
He sent me a picture and it really does not show up well. I will try and upload it here but am thinking that the screen itself is bad Since the set does this all the time even without any video source where the screen should be blue.
Am i coorect?

Most likely a bad panel...BUT it IS possible that a T-con could cause this...if the set uses one.

If pushing on the front of the panel ...or bending it (GENTLY), causes the lines to disappear/change...then a panel is DEFINITELY the problem.

It is a module--usually small--but not ALWAYS..that is between the panel and the signal board. ( occasionally...there will be a "line doubler board or such between it and the signal board--but not often). usually at top but i have seen them at the bottom.

Its purpose is to take the signals from the signal board and convert them into a format the various lines and columns of the panel can use. It CAN cause lines and /or distortion in the pix. Stands for "Timing and Control " board.

Is it an LCD or plasma? In general, horizontal lines on a plasma may be repairable because the row driver ICs are usually on boards that plug into the panel. I've even successfully soldered on new ICs before, but it's lower risk to replace the boards.

Vertical lines are almost never repairable because the column driver ICs are part of the ribbon cables that are bonded to the panel.

For an LCD, horizontal, or vertical lines almost always means a bad panel.
