What do they do?

That's obvious, they make it look like a TV :)

Due to the general public's lack of interest in anything other than the latest and greatest, marketing this thing worldwide would probably result in huge financial losses for LG. Makes me think of the hit RCA took because of the CED.

I don't think you can "fish tank" a flat panel, maybe you could "ant farm" it instead.

Call me crazy but I don't think it's a bad idea, not that I would necessarily want one, but it adds a little flair to the design.

Ha, good idea. :D Maybe we ought to start posting want ads for flat panels to turn into ant farms, or post ads with pics of them suggesting that the taker do that.

I like it, but somehow it reminds me of a dachshund...

I wonder how they make a rotary tuner with 400 plus detents? :)

Maybe it's like a mouse wheel, rotate it clockwise does "channel up" and counterclockwise "channel down". With a digital connection to the usual PLL tuner. Which would also make it work with the usual remote control.

That's what I would suspect. A lot of car stereos tune that way now, having knobs you can turn infinitely in either direction that just send pulses to the electronics of the radio so it can know how far it has been tuned up or down. They do have detents, of course, so you can feel how far to turn for a change of 1.

Korea uses ATSC, so you could import one and it'll work over here.

That last link goes to a tv that supports NTSC3.58, from what I can see from a quick search, its our old NTSC system..... It must still be used in other areas around the world, or the manufacturers believed export to US market might one day be possible again.....? I assume in some of the places where it's used, they don't subscribe to the throw away way of thinking and will not just change and throw away good stuff for no reason except to drive a dead economy...

Buy one; re-engineer the microprocessor, drive electronics, and power supply to use tubes.

Oh, and then replace the LCD with a CRT.

It wouldn't really need to use tubes in my opinion, especially the problematic 6GH8 (I know next to nothing about tubes, but that tidbit was just about force-fed in another thread), but a PCB that doesn't use surface-mount everything and tear like heavy-gauge cardboard would be a must.

The concept of letting a flat-panel "TV" even cross my threshold, let alone buying one, is alien to me.

I just wanted to see an air conditioned room-full-of-tubes and relays that would have to be used to poorly approximate what would otherwise be a silicon microprocessor.

Watching Desk Set would be the next best thing.

It would be a simple rotary encoder switch like the ones used as volume controls in some modern amps.
