The Grundig VCR with built in satellite receiver. I think they are from the early 90's because those channels used to broadcast from the European Astra satellite (19.2e) in analogue. Nice bits of kit and expensive at the time, but due to digital changeover the satellite part is now useless. The dish that came part of the Grundig package is a Gregorian dual reflector high-gain dish.

I have one of these beasts from 1980. I believe it was the first VCR to offer a truly cordless remote.

Must have cost a small fortune new. It has every bell and whistle you can think of.

Got it for free at a thrift store complete with brick remote. Still works great, although the power supply could really use a recap.

Interesting indeed!!

What really would be cool is finding a domestic VCR that played PAL also!!

That is a fascinating deck. I've seen and own JVC long ways loading VHS decks, but I've never seen a dual dubbing deck with a long ways loading mech like that...It is amazing some of the Japanese designs that never made it to the USA.

Toshiba A-L91: Arrows and 2 remotes!

By arrows do you mean VU meters?

I can't recall 2 different remote options for the same model deck...But having a deck that would respond to either of two different IR codes (selectable) and a remote that could send 2 different codes (also selectable) was not uncommon on mid-range and up VCRs...The idea is that some owners might buy 2 decks and use them to edit and or dub video from one tape/deck to another so having one deck/remote set to 1 IR code and the other set to the other made it easy to remote control the decks independently...I have a couple of cheaper JVC S-VHS-ET decks with such a remote arrangement and have taken advantage of that feature for dubbing/editing extensively.

I don't remember what model it was or who made it, but I remember years ago I had a Stereo VCR (don't know if it was HiFi or if it was Linear Stereo) that had a VU meter built into the flap for the loading mechanism for the VCR much like the one in post #6 except I don't the one I had was a Toshiba (at least not that I remember anyways).

Anyone here know which make and model that might of been? I was thinking it may have been a 1980s model but not sure, and it was definitely a model that was meant for the USA market and not a model that was intended for the European or Japanese Market.

I think it was one someone had given to me to fix up and use because it had quit working on them.

I had gotten it to play tapes again but when I went to put it back together I had accidentally pinched the wires for the VU Meters on the flap for the loading mechanism which resulted in the VU meters not working anymore so I had to get rid of the deck.

The VU Meter wires fed through a hole that went through the hinge of the flap, and then down the side of the loading carriage and then connected to the mainboard with a plug.

Does it work on North American TV standards, or is it just for European TV? I saw very little on the control panel to suggest this machine would work at all on North America's ATSC television standards. That is, it might have worked before the government totally messed up the TV standards in this country, forcing everyone to buy a new TV (I cannot use my Zenith SMS1917SG color set anymore, even though it still works [at least it makes a raster] after 20+ years, no thanks to this nonsense), but I am not at all sure this VCR will work on ATSC. It probably will not work at all with ATSC 3.0, the next new standard which will again force Americans to scrap their present flat screen TVs, even if the sets still work (!), and buy a new one.

Good grief! Will this nonsense ever end?

There is something else to consider as well. VCRs will not record ATSC TV signals, including those on cable, so there would be little or no use for this machine anyway, except for playing back old VHS tapes recorded in the former NTSC standard. The video recording scheme on some cable systems, such as Spectrum in my area, works quite well, but IMHO it is a very poor excuse for "real" VCRs or DVRs.

Sheeesh!

National (Panasonic) NV-BS1 S-VHS with built-in satellte receiver.

JVC and Dish Network had a VCR/satellite receiver combo in the US during the late 90's. Recorded the actual satellite digital feed on D-VHS so there was no loss in picture quality when you played it back. Sort of the first DVR.

I am currently working on a Toshiba SV-771, one of two VHS tray-load VCRs (the other being a JVC, I believe). It has an Eject button on the remote too, making me wonder why more VCRs didn't have that. This thing is so polite, it even pops the tape up a bit when ejecting so you can grab it easily.
