When did 27" sets start appearing? Where there any tube chassis sets with a 27 inch screen?

As far as color TV's, I believe it was in the early '80's. I know of no older tube chassis 27" color TV's; however, I think there were some higher end 27" tube type B&W's during the '50's and '60's. Up until the early '70's, a 23V was the largest color TV that was available as far as CRT direct view. Sometime around '70-'71, they came out with a 25V color CRT. In the very late '70's, Sony introduced a 26" color TV.

I know both Zenith and Magnavox had 25" color sets in the mid 60s.

Your thinking bulb size not viewable area. Around 1967-68 CRTs lost 2" off their designation numbers because the govt passed a law forcing makers to designate tubes based on viewable area and not bulb size as had been the standard so a 25--P22 became a 23---P22.

10 different 27 inch monochrome tube types had been registered before 1961, so somebody had been building sets with them. I believe RCA had manufactured a 27 inch set in either '53 or '54.

The OP was in the wrong place anyway. He specifically asked about tube chassis sets in the solid-state TV forum.

yes,a hybrid with the 25v crt that was advertised as a 27 inch screen.it may have been an olympic brand that was built by wells-gardner maybe?my memory is clear on this claim but not on the specific maker.

Well, the thing of it is, I just wanted to know when 27" sets came out, and if so, where there any tube chassis sets. It's kind of a general question that could have gone in either, and there is no general TV forum.

IIRC Zenith 27" started with Y line. ( 9-181 sets) The Sony 26 was the
first over 25" that I remember.
when I was a kid my father bought a BIG maggy B&W.
It was no UHF so '64 or before. It was biggest anyone made
then I think 27" ( advertized). It had that strange toned picture
I remember on old Maggies even noticable to me. It was a
toilet, junked in '67 for a Zenith color.
