I just parted out on of those, I didn't have any more room. But the good news is it had a Sylvania RE crt in it.

I'm pretty sure it's the same model as your avatar, except it's dark wood. Hopefully I'll have a picture soon.

If it's the one I think it is, it was for sale on E-Bay a while ago for $1,000.00

I remember that set. Another collector here in Tucson bought that one. This is a different seller and was listed on CL about 6 weeks ago. I've been in contact with the seller over the past few days, and we have a deal. It's just a matter of making arrangements for which day to pick it up. I can't wait!

Gonna guess CTC-15 clone-C43 chassis. That tri-color emblem lights up at the bottom. Going to be in Chandler for TG hi-volt. Looking forward to warmer weather. PM me if you need any help etc. while I'm there or if you need anything like a tube or 2 or 5.

It looks so much better in the Fruitwood cabinet then the Antique Ivory.

I think the antique ivory looks way cool too! You don't see too many of those.

Yep, I about killed myself on mine.....several times. I've moved it about 5 times over the years, up the stairs, down the stairs, in a storage locker, back out and back in again.LOL! It's the same set but a rectangular screen. Weighs an efffin ton!

OK......back home after a long day of driving, loading and unloading. Here are some pictures of the set. It is a Magnavox model 2MR556K in Fruitwood with a C39 television chassis. The lady I bought it from is the original owner who is 81 years old. She told me that the TV hasn't worked in a long time, and she's just been using it as a stand for current TV. The inside is really dusty but looks totally unmolested. It has the original Magnavox 21FJP22 tube, which started out a little flat, but is waking up nicely with running the filaments for a while. The photo of the CRT tester shows what I measured after about 10 minutes of wake-up. I'll leave it cook for an hour or so and re-test. The set has the original remote control and the 45RPM adapter for the turntable. The amp and tuner are solid state, and there are a 15" woofer and horn tweeter on each side of the cabinet.

That is some kind of pretty, I'm glad you got it! I think a lot of the sellers really are glad to see someone who appreciates their old sets go to a good home. Enjoy the heck out of it!

Just a little FYI: The remote will also allow you to change records.

even though its not tube, those old astrosonics sound pretty good. I have a couple and they do very well.

Also a little FYI: The convergence board is on a seperate panel that drops down from the bottom of the set. It has enough wire so you can sit away from the set to see the screen as you make the adjustments. Very convenient! If you need the convergence procedures, let me know.

Looks great!I have a 1967 imperial astrosonic with a built in reel-to reel tape deck that really rocks the house.I am sure that one will, too.

that set is awesome!! Was there a pic of the remote, or did I over look it?

Bill R

The convergence board in that is unscrewed from its current position, flipped around and mounted on the two screws along the top of the set. This allows you to see the crt while adjusting it. This is typical of sets, especially RCA and their clones, from the early 60's. I think Zenith was about the most convenient arrangment with the controls behind the speaker.

It looks like a CTC12 to me. Is that a 6DQ5 horiz out.
I didn't think Magnavox built a solid state stereo that early. Especially, one that powerful, to drive that speaker system.
Very impressive! :thmbsp:

The AstroSonic series came out in late 1962.

Just back from visiting the family over Thanksgiving. The horizontal output is a 6DQ5. The TV chassis is a C39, not sure what the equivalent RCA chassis is. The remote is two button Magnavox Phantom. I just bought a spare remote on the bay.

The CTC12's were the last to use the 6DQ5 tubes and the '15s went to the 6JE6's plus were unique in using a solid state "stick" focus rectifier diode. After that RCA went back to tube rectification.

Saw a 25" combo today. What year did they introduce the "25" ? (actually measures just under 24")

consoleguy67
11-30-2012, 07:32 AM
They started with 25" rectangular screens in 1966. In my sales book, there is still one 21" roundie combo listed.

hi_volt
11-30-2012, 07:55 AM
I believe there was some overlap of the roundie and rectangular set as the manufacturers used up all of the remaining stock of round tubes during the transition. At that time, they priced the roundie sets lower. I think you could still buy roundies as late as 1968.

From what I've read, Philco was still selling roundie sets in 1968.

Quite correct re the last roundies, Philco had the 17MT80, Magnavox had the T938. A bit earlier, RCA had the CTC20 and GE had the CB-21.

Wow! Hi volt, I have this same console in a maple cabinet with remote control. I took the CRT out of it to save a CTC10, so let me know if you need any parts since I think I'm just going to part it out.

Thanks. As soon as my tube order comes in (I had a number of bad tubes in the chroma and video circuits), I'll bring the set up on a variac and see what she does. Flyback looks OK visually. No missing parts that I can see.

I think your set might be from 1963. My set has a different chassis, and the stereo is an Astro-Sonic. Mine also has Instant On (turned off!!), and a sepia switch on the back. I also noticed that your set says 'Color' on the control panel; mine does not.
