I picked up this mid '60's Silvertone mono solid state portable record player for $7 at the flea market. I'm not much into solid state portables; but, this one looks like it might be worth fixing. The changer was built by Crescent and the rest of the unit was made by Warwick Electronics. It will need new filter caps, a new cartridge, and a rebuilt idler wheel. I suspect the cartridge is a 3V crystal type. Also, the tonearm rest is broken and the 45 adapter is missing.

i like it... Never seen that brand of changer before.

I'd be curious to see what the amp looks like, my portables are all tube except the obligatory califone

I'll post a picture of it before I re-cap it. I did find similar models is the '64 and '66 Sears Christmas catalogs for around $48. They advertised these as their best mono players. Of course, by the mid '60's, mono players were mostly all towards the low end of the spectrum. They also had a tube unit with a BSR changer that was about $12 cheaper.

I have one of those tube units from '64 in a blue and white case. It basically works but is due to have its filter caps replaced as it does have a bit of hum.

Thanks for the picture... looks like the chassis was designed for stereo or mono. Does it have a US made speaker too?

I replaced the two section filter cap, as well as 3 electrolytic caps on the chassis. I also cleaned the controls and the amp seems to work OK. Now, I need to replace the cartridge. The changer uses an EV 148; which, is a stereo (wired for mono) 3 volt crystal cartridge. The old one is weak and the suspension is shot. I have not pulled the speaker; but, it's probably USA built.
