View Full Version : What is this, Home made?

This is a 1953 dated picture, looks like it has a reversed Dumont Chassis (or reversed negative) but the cabinet looks home made.
I wonder if it was really that Trapezoidal or if it's a camera effect like all the Sams Photofacts have?

I placed a bid on it just because it's odd.

I'd say it's really trapezoidal. Look at the left door edge compared to the wall trim.

Could it be a repurposed phonograph cabinet? I see what looks like a place to insert a crank.

its the wood grain, hold a flat edge to the screen edge, and follow it down to the speaker and then compare it to the door edge. Its square, just a little lense distortion.

Yes, that's a phonograph cabinet, a Victor Orthophonic Credenza from the late 20's. Wonder what happened to the re-entrant horn...

Not trapezoidal - just a distorted, scanned image from a photo, book or magazine. Other elements in the photo look funny too.

I used to get that with my old HP scanner - squiggly lines that were supposed to be straight.

I just noticed the "glare" that extends along the left of the cabinet - looks like a photo taken with a camera of either a photo, book, or magazine.

I thought it was melting........

Yah, if someone photographed a page or a photo print, that would account for the skewed perspective. And the waviness in the cabinet top would be waviness in the page or print, which wouldn't have been there had it been pressed flat for scanning.

I just noticed the left foot is setting down in a slit in the carpet. :scratch2:

That's definately a Victor Orthophonic Credenza case. I recognize what's left of the turnings in front, and, see crank hole at side. Looks like a fake listing to me. I'd cancel my bid, if I were you.

It's just a picture I'm bidding on, not an actual TV.
I'm not all that interested in it now that the mystery is solved.

I have never tried vinegar & water to clean but hear people do this often. It sounds like it would smell bad.

It makes somethings smell better. LOL

I see that too. I vote that it's a re-cabineted DuMont in a Brunswick Radiola-phono cabinet. Or an RCA Victor cabinet, but I think it's the Brunswick version.

Brunswick did buy from Victor/RCA, but mainly radios. They "rolled their own" phonographs, but you could be right about it being a Brunswick. It would be exceedingly rare if it were. It sure does look like a Dumont TV! Hope the builder put a BIG speaker in it.:D

The dial is on the wrong side for a Dumont, also there are only four small knobs and I think the Dumonts had five, in a different pattern than this.

I believe that is a Transvision chassis. The 12 inch kits had that same knob arrangement.

I think your right, look here:
http://www.collectorkevin.com/transvision.htm

This set is one knob short but being a kit it may have had some mods.

It'd be pretty wild if this Frankenvision set turned up someday, doubtful though, it was probably turned into a Wine rack at some point, and still later, a Fish tank.

Yes, I have a 12" Transvision and this looks like an identical arrangement. Mine has a homemade plywood cabinet.
