Hi all. New guy here. I was referred here from the guys at audiokarma, after posting a thread about this old TV I'm getting from a friend in a few weeks when she moves.

I'm considering gutting it, and making a stereo stand out of it, much to the dismay of those who appreciate old television sets. I can appreciate the desire to preserve it, but I'm pretty hell bent on making a stereo stand out of it.

Anyway, I just wanted to post it here to see if anyone knows the approximate value of this, and to make sure I'm not destroying something rare or valuable.

I would also appreciate any advise on discharging caps etc. before I take it apart. Thanks in advance.

Not worth much I suspect, just a square tube Philco. I had an earlier round tube Philco, and even after it was restored I only got $250 for it (which is probably a lot). Why not donate the guts of the TV to someone here, then you can feel safe doing what you will with the cab knowing the electronics will come to some use.

If you're going to destroy a set, that would be the one. Sets like this have little to no value. Videokarma has a classifieds section, where you could put the parts up. Don't know if you've looked it over yet, but pulling the chassis is easy: just pull of the knobs from the front panel, and then undo a few bolts from underneath the shelf that the chassis rests on. The whole thing should slide out, and should take less than five minutes (Manufacturers did this on purpose, since they knew the repairman would have to do this frequently).

Thanks for the info guys. I don't have it yet, but I've been wondering how hard it will be to take apart.

I'm also glad that it's not too valuable. Those guys on audiokarma were doggin' me hard for not preserving it, but I really have no reason to put the money into it, when I'm getting it for free, and have a need for a stereo stand. I think it should turn out nice.

I'll try to post a pic after I get it finished and get it loaded up with some vintage Yamaha stereo componets.

There's two chassis in that model. The CRT is mounted separately in the cabinet. Still it's easy to disassemble.

As it's MLK day: Your TV looks similar to the one Emmett Till's family had.

Love to have a 21 inch version of that Philco. I cut my TV repair teeth on tandem chassis Philco's back in the late 60s when they were sitting on the side of the road. Too bad this one won't make it, but you can't save 'em all...
