I have an old TV with some caps rated 6,000 volts and if I need to replace them could I put 3 .003 mfd @ 1600v in series to replace a .001 @ 6,000v?

If you put 3 0.003uF 1600V capacitors in series you would get 0.001uF of capacitance with an effective voltage rating of 4800V. You would want to use 3 capacitors of at least 2000V rating. If you put 4 of these in series you would get 0.00075uF at 6400V. You can buy 6000V rated 0.001uF caps through Allied Electronics (part number 225-6015) and other vendors. These are made by ASC.

I tried Allied for this cap and they told me minimum order was 97 of them and leed time was 13 weeks.

I know I figured wrong on the voltage. Would need 4 at .004 mfd I think.

Justradios at http://www.justradios.com/ has these for a few bucks each, I think the 8000 volt ones are actually a little cheaper and are still smaller than the originals.

I wonder when Allied went to the minimum order deal, I've bought from them before and there was no such thing then, but that's been a few years.

That doesn't sound right. I bought small numbers of caps from Allied twice in the last month or two. Don't remember the totals offhand, but it was maybe $20 for one order, $30 something for the other . . . nothing outrageous, or I would have tried somewhere else.

It's the 8KV ones that have a minimum quantity of 91. They're only $1.68.
