I'm 99.99999999% sure that one has the 21AXP22 conversion. The exposed screen area looks wrong for the 19VP22. I've had both versions of the 19CT1. The 19" tube looks very different in back (has a flange like the 15GP22), and if I recall, does not use field magnets. Interesting about the experimental stamp though! That makes me think the set could go into orbit, even if it does prove to have the 21" tube.

I eMailed the seller as follows:

Hi, Just FYI, your set looks to have the 21" upgrade conversion installed; using a 21AXP22 metal tube. Have you checked for sure? I can see from the front mask, the field magnets, and the tube shroud, that at least at one time, a 21 was in that TV. As you mentioned in the ad, most all of the 19CT1s were upgraded free of charge by Motorola in 1956. You can verify which one you have by pulling the socket off the tube, and checking what style of socket is on it. If it's light brown bakelite base on the tube, I may be wrong, and it's indeed a 19. If it's black bakelite, it's most likely a 21. Also, the pin-out is different. I can send you a photo of a 19VP22 socket next to a 21AXP22 socket if you like; just let me know your eMail address as I can't send a photo from eBay messaging.

Best, Charles

Well, he DID have to "Try 'Er out", too, didn't he ?!? Grrrrrrrrr....

I like that starting price! This one looks much rougher than the last one!

I'm .00000001% even more certain that's a 21AX.

I figured more of these would pop up after the last auction, not interested, I think I have a much rarer set than this in my collection right now:D Maybe..... This one says experimental though, which makes it interesting.

I like that experimental stamp. I'll have to start putting that on my sets.

Seems the original 19" mask has gold trim (probably painted on) directly around the CRT, and the 21" upgrade does not. Also, seems we've seen this "Experimental Not For Resale" stamp on these before.

Definitely looks like a 21AX, you can see the metal shell and the plastic cover.

It's really rough but it could be refinished nicely, I don't think I'd pay the opening bid though.

The Motorola 19CT1 at the ETF Museum also has the "Experimental Not For Resale"" stamped on the top. I believe there is at least one additional, not counting the current e-bay offering, with the stamp. The ETF set has the original 19" tube with the gold painted mask. ETF - Motorola 19CT1

I wonder how many have the stamp? How many experimental sets do they need??

I don't think I'd pay the opening bid though.

At that price, I'd expect it to have been restored to perfect operating condition, with pictures of it with an image on the CRT in the ebay listing...
And delivered to my door in a stretch limo. :D

I have an RCA CTC115 that has the chassis marked "pilot run". But I used to work for RCA 25 years ago.

The pictures confirm it compared to previous eBay auction for a 19CT1

He sure was a brave soul for plugging it in! I'm surprised he didn't get any unexpected bangs or pows! From the looks of the chassis, you'd almost certainly expect some smoke. :yikes:

I keep waiting for one of these descriptions to say;
"I plugged it in and let out all of the old smoke for the new owner."

How about the broken one with the white top? Looks like it has been in a very damp area.

I've had two of them, and neither had the stamp. One was the table model identical to this one; the other a console.

The seller eMailed me back, and says he now believes it's the 21AXP22. The mask is a dead give-away. I've only ever seen two sets with 19VP22s in them; my Hoffman prototype and one of two CBS-Columbia 360s that I've had. All other 19" sets I've seen or owned, had 21" tubes installed. The other CBS 360 has a real hack job, where scissors appear to have been used to make the mask enlarged!

I can't tell if the chassis is still copper colored or if it's rusted?

Mark,

I suspect Motorola built quite a few pre-production "experimental" receivers for trade show demonstrations and for their many distributors to provide dealers with demo models for private and public viewings. Motorola worked hard to promote and sell the "BIG 19" color tube" as long as they could, knowing that larger screens, such as RCA's 21" were in development.

Yes, it looks like member Cheetam (cheat 'em? gotta love it) waited for the original page to be removed, then immediately put up his own auction page, an almost identical copy-and-paste of the August auction.

There have been fake auctions of a few of the nicer things in my website. In one of them, the "seller" offered to ship my 250-pound Scott radio/tv/phono combo from Peru to the UK for an absurdly low charge. They copied everything from the article, photos and text.

Unfortunately, I suspect the risk of running a fake auction is about the same as failing to pay state sales tax for an online purchase. Sure, it's attempted fraud, but what can eBay do but cancel your account, which was probably a fake identity in the first place. I picture a 17-year old geek in, say, Latvia, posting fake auctions on, say eBay UK, and hoping someone will eventually bite.

Does seem like a duplicate of an identical item sold a few months back on eBay. However, if someone knows anyone across the pond perhaps they could call this guys bluff. Cash on delivery usually does it.

A look at the London C.L. "Electronics" items seems to indicate that it's peppered with iconic High-End audio products at 'to-good-to-be-true' prices. Becoming impossible to police/moderate ?
