I had been wanting to replace the 680uf 200 volt cap in my 1991 RCA Colortrak 2000 since I found it. The HV regulation was okayish, but could have been better.

As luck would have it, someone gave me an RCA colortrak from 2001. I found out that the chassis board had old pancake syrup all over it, so I junked it. Before I threw it out however, I saw that it had a 680uf 200 volt filter cap...

So I replaced a 17 year old filter cap with a 7 year old filter cap.

The results are encouraging. HV regulation seems to be improved. For some reason I had to readjust the G2 and focus controls as they were a bit off. I assume the newer cap changed the HV a little bit.

There should be another cap in the B+ line. It's rated somewhere between 47 uf and 100 uf @ 160 volts. You might want to change that one while you're at it.

You mean a 33uf 180 volt light blue Nichicon cap? Changed that too.

Yes, come to think of it.

I wasn't going to change it, but I pulled the newer one off the syrup coated chassis, cleaned it up, and tested them both. The newer one had a slightly higher reading (~1uf higher) so, I put that one in. The newer one is also rated for 200 volts.

Did the new filter cap help at all with the black streaks when there was white text on a black background?

Methinks a full recap would greatly improve PQ on older TV's no?

Um, if it helped, it helped slightly. The streaks are still there.

Eventually I'm probably going to shotgun all the caps in the video section, but I want to be sure I replace them with new caps that won't fail inside of three years.

PS: The streaking also happens with black text on an orange background. Makes the area to the left and to the right look like a darker orange.

Shoulda grabbed it. Might have had a good CRT in it.

MRX, if you start shotgunning caps make sure you replace them with Nichicon, Nippon/United Chemicon, Rubycon, Sanyo, or Panasonic/Matsushita. Personally I'd go with Rubycon or Matsushita, those two are tops.

I frequent badcaps.net a lot, that's where I get all my info.

I've had a few Rubycons go bad on me...

I'd rather go with all Nichicons if I could.

I've seen some of the Rubycon's fail and leak in these early '90's RCA's. I've got a '90 CTC169 chassis that has already had leaking electrolytics replaced and wires jumped across the foil that was eaten away. Now, there are more leaking caps that I've got to deal with.

Really?

That would explain the Rubycon that dried out and made my JVC sound like an electric motor.

Well in any case stick to Japanese manufacturers. There's somewhat of a capacitor epidemic going on right now, everyone seems to be using crap especially in LCD monitors.

Believe me. I know.

I'm tempted to use the caps from a 2004 JVC chassis I have. The chassis itself is fine. It's just that the CRT was shot. However, I'm unsure of the quality of the caps. they're fine now, but they're only a few years old.

What do you guys think of Lelon caps? That 2004 JVC board has mostly Lelon caps on it. Are they good caps, or junk?

EDIT: according to Google, I'd be a fool to use Lelon caps. Found a few too many horror stories.

Lelon is shit.

As luck would have it, I realized that one of the boards I salvaged from either a 2003 or 2004 JVC TV is populated with mostly Nichicon caps. As the TV itself worked fine except for a very weak CRT, I decided to use caps from this board in my Colortrak 2000 TV. I replaced several Taicon caps with Nichicons.

The color smearing issue seems to be mostly gone. On one of my test screens (dark blue text on a white background) It's only barely noticable now. Seeing as that's better then many RECENT CRT sets, I think I'm done with recapping for now.
