Thanks Larry, hope you can help. Looks like the Sams is a #93 folder 9.The set is in real good shape as far as the cabinet, haven't checked the electronics out yet. It needs a recap for sure. Didn't know the year for sure. Looks like i got my first 49 RCA. Thanks Edison64.

RCA model numbers are easy in the 40s & early 1950: 1st digit = year model; 9 TC 243 . I think that the TC = type of product (TV consolette), and 243 may be the cabinet model. By late '50, they changed it around and made such sets as the T-100 and T-120, which were their cheap metal table models (the 100 and 120 = screen size; 10" vs/ 12")

I have one of these, interesting because it was originally owned by one of the wealthiest men in the county. When I got it, it was being used as a display in the local RCA dealer showroom. I haven't done a thing with mine...saving it for a future winter project.

Okay it looks like the back cover is the wrong one. Looks like i need one of those. I think i'll try to find all my parts i need before i do a recap. The picture tube came up pretty good just letting it cook for awhile at about 8 volts. I really like the way its made and so far its the oldest i have. Sure hope Larry has the parts i need.

Bryan did you get the letter i sent you??????????

Larry PM sent, and since you have a spare chassis or two i hope you will have the other parts i need. It's in to good of shape to part out. I don't like to lose a one if i can help it. The knobs are the main items i need right now. I can always home brew a back cover.

Thanks,

Thanks Larry, i received my Sams in great shape. Let me know the shipping on it and i'll send it to you. Do you know if another model RCA knobs will fit this one? Not having much luck on any of them.

Bryan, glad you got the letter okay. You can't tell sometimes with SNAIL MAIL.

Don,

I'll have to check on the knobs, but I think those needed are similar to other early RCA's. You don't owe me anything on the Sam's.

There were quite a lot of RCA models with the same knobs.

This one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-RCA-VICTOR-MODEL-T-121-LOOK_W0QQitemZ310087504889

Really good closeup if it helps another AKer locate one in the junk drawer.

And so does this one (and back panel too):

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330274551403

It's too nice to scavenge but I've seen others that went for parts. If you find a parts set try to get all 4 knobs, as the color variation might be significant between TVs and one of them off-color looks bad.

Larry, sure appreciate you giving it to me and free shipping too. Like to see Walmart come close to that price. Kbmuri from the Sams i have, they are two different colors. A dark set and a tan set. Hate to scrape a set just to get the knobs and back panel. Too many are scraped as it is. Very much a part of our history that is lost for good. I'm sure someone has the parts from one already scraped. The big question is who it is right now. Thanks for the info. Thats going to help out alot.

Larry, could you spare one of those chassis for me? I have a 9T246 needing parts, including a couple of petentiometers.
Also need a rebuildable replacement chassis for a model T-120. UPS totaled the already highly dammaged chassis.
Thanks.

I have one too. Like bgadow I mean to restore mine, but not while it's warm outside.

http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=111789&d=1223344362

It's dusty, makes the photo look a little rough. A lot of dust between the CRT and faceplate too.
It's in better condition, in person.

Your channel selector will look like this:

http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=111790&d=1223344362

It's the same size/style as the others, just with a flat brass plate bisecting it.
Maybe another AKer will recognize it. The numbers are on a plastic ring
behind the knob, not part of the knob. You'll need one-o-those too.

I have one spare knob. It's not a matching brown. It's the color of the
original brown M&M -- a bit lighter than milk chocolate. The knobs on the set
are very dark brown, like Hershey's Dark.

http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=111791&d=1223344362

I guess I could part with it, but I don't think you'd like the color mismatch.
Keep looking first. If no luck at all, it might do temporarily.

Thanks for the great pics Kbmuri didn't know the channel selector ring was separate. Is the on/off volume knob the same as the two center knobs? Sure looks like it in the pics. I don't think we have dealt in the past Grimmer, but if you decide to part the set out we sure can now. The two center knobs on my set are dark brown almost a black. Thanks for all the help. The help here is unreal.

I may have that channel selector knob. Let me dig around tonight.

bgadow
10-07-2008, 11:59 AM
I know I have a whole bag full of the smaller knobs; I have seen a couple shaft variations. I need to dig them out.

The channel number plate was widely used by RCA and several others. It's held on from the inside with a spring clip. They are prone to breaking.

kbmuri
10-07-2008, 12:15 PM
Yes, the on/off knob is identical to the center two (unless the shaft diameters vary). The channel selecter is also the same, except for the brass plate bisecting it -- a person could probably manufacture that if he couldn't find one original. I hope somebody can get you the very dark brown replacements. Like I said, my light-brown one is up for grabs as a "last resort" if you "must".

The left two knobs (Vertical/Horizontal and Brightness/Picture) are two-piece knobs (the outer ring and inner knob turn independently). The third knob (Off-Sound) is a one-piece casting (outer ring and inner knob do not turn independently). The light-brown spare knob I have is one-piece casting (will only work as an Off-Sound knob).

Astounding...There is a double-1st cousin to the TV pictured above on You-Know-Where right now, looks to have a 16" CRT, & the seller has it listed as a "1930" model TV...As I keep saying, People who DON'T know about & love these things like WE do really have NO BUSINESS having them...

Without seeing what your set looks like, make, model, etc., I don't know it the knobs being offered are correct, or, not. The four knobs don't even seeem to match each-other. Two look like from a 1949 RCA, and, two look like they are from a 1946 RCA.
What brand, and, model set do you have?
Ebay removed that listing, so, I can't see it.

OOps. Now I see. No. They are the wrong knobs. You need channel selector, and, fine tuning knobs, plus, the plastic dial escutcheon that has the numbers. I might have the fine tuning knob, and, the escutcheon, but, I'm out of the channel selector knob.

That would be great if you have the fine tuning knob and the escutcheon. With the members help, like you Bill, i may be able to get it together. The set is in real good shape as for appearance. Don't know what they did with the knobs. That also saved me from buying knobs that won't work. Bill just let me know on the price and shipping. Zip 41179. The smaller knobs are wrong too.

Don

Thanks Jonboy55 for the reply on the knobs. I sure didn't know if they would work or not. They are a few different models that will work with this set. I guess i could buy another set for the parts i need, but i hate to part out a set that can be restored. These old sets are a very much part of our history. Enough of them gets trashed or made into a fish tanks already. A part of us that is lost forever. Didn't think i would have any problem finding them. I have ordered the caps for it already. The pic tube is good and set looks really good. I'm sure i can find what i need for it without parting another one out.

Thanks,

The chassis is entirely different, but, the knobs, and, dial escutcheon are exactly the same as yours.
Back cover won't work, though it is close.
The chassis no in that set is KCS 45. It was a budget set with selenium rectifiers in the lv supply.
I'd just hate to see that set destroyed.
If you buy it, please don't strip the set. It's un common.
But, the good news is your most important parts are there.....

The Edison? Yep, but, luck is improving. I bought a "junker" with a good bottom case with stripes, and, a good motor. I have done most of the mechanical work, and, am re finnishing the case now.

Or, the tv?
