Excellent! Now we have proof that it's possible to do successful cataract surgery on otherwise-good 21FJP22's! What solvent did you use when you performed this procedure on your 21FJP22?

Now we just need someone besides Hawk-Eye to enter the market as a rebuilder. Nothing against Hawk-Eye, I would just prefer to have two or more suppliers of this service because competition is a good thing and one supplier might not be able to keep up with the demand as the market grows. We're bound to find through this forum that there are far more collectors of vintage tv sets than any of us ever thought existed. We're practicing what amounts to a lost art here.

Cataracts occur when the laminated safety glass of the tube begins to separate from the tube's faceplate. They are most common with the 21FJP22, although they can occur with other tubes that have laminated safety glass such as 21GVP22 and even some rectangular tubes. Tubes such as the 15GP22, 15HP22, 21AXP22, 21CYP22, 21FBP22, and 21GUP22 cannot develop cararacts because the safety glass used with these tubes is a separate component and there is no adhesive bond between faceplate and safety glass on these tube types.

A NOTE TO COLOR COLLECTORS. Don't throw any 21FJP22's with cataracts away that measure good emission!!! ... Rob

What about tubes that need regunning and/or cataract surgery? I've got 4 duds taking up space in my gargage. Should I keep them, or is there anyone with sets that have no CRT at all who might want them? My 18-year-old stepson is threatening to take them out into the outskirts of town somewhere and shoot them if I don't move them.

Additional Note -- I just remembered the chassis numbers of the Zenith sets my grandparents owned. Two were 24MC32's and one was a 25NC38.

What about those 4 dud 21FJP22's in my garage? Anyone have a set with a broken or missing CRT and need a rebuildable dud? Only one of the four has cataracts, all have weak emission. Three have boxes for them and I'll give them to anyone who's interested for the cost of shipping. If no one wants them, the kid is going to haul 'em out into farm country and put a bullet in 'em from about 60 yards to videotape the results.

I have no interest in dud color CRT's as I cannot get them re-gunned. I'll only have interest in cataract CRT's that otherwise measure excellent, otherwise it isn't worth all the bother to perform the cataract surgery. Why not contact Hawkeye and see if he wants 'em.

Just a matter of hours before a group of recent high school graduates were going to haul those dud tubes away to be shot for a video, someone did email me and would like the tubes saved. As I suspected, there was indeed someone out there who needed rebuildable dud tubes to replace "aired" tubes that could not be rebuilt. I can get other rebuildable dud tubes if there is interest in them, and I will give them to anyone who needs them provided the recipient of the tubes makes all transportation arrangements (picks them up here or sends a truck) and provided I can still get them free as I discussed with the current owner of the tubes. Are there any more collectors who have sets with "aired" CRT's and are in need of a rebuildable dud tube. Let me know and I'll make the necessary phone calls to obtain some more. There are more duds (I believe three of them still under vacuum) in a local warehouse.

I have a 1955 metal 21" dud I would like to get rid of.

It's under vaccum and was rejuvenated enough to make a picture but needs to be rebuilt.

Can you find a home for this one?

If you cannot store that I might take it off your hands. You really should keep it though. Hawkeye might be able to re-gun it someday and you know how hard 21AXP22's are to find.

Where are these duds located? I may want all of them esp the metal one. How many more can you get? Shipping is cheaper on all of them put together on a pallet. I only want the ones that are under vacuum. Julian Burke
