The final round of the 2007 Masters Golf tournament airs this Sunday at 3:30 pm edt.on CBS. However, one hour prior to the telecast a colorized version of the final holes of the original 1960 b&w telecast will be broadcast. Check out these articles on the why and how the did it.

Live NTSC remote color telecasts had been broadcast at least since Jan. 1954. NBC's pioneering 1954 Rose Parade color telecast is a good example.Los Angeles independent station KTLA telecast the Rose Parade live in color in 1955 & 1956. NBC telecast the 1955 World Series live in color starting in 1955 as well as many live sporting events in color in the late '50's. RCA/NBC heavily promoted these broadcasts to sell RCA Victor color tv's. This, of course, does not include the short lived CBS field sequential color remote telecasts in the 1951 period. Color videotape was in limited use, mainly by NBC for time shifting, but also by other broadcasters by 1960.

NBC was broadcasting college football "In living color" in the fifties.

Yeah, y'all are right-I forgot what a meglomaniac Sarnoff was, he'd do ANYTHING to make color TV go- & sporting events were a good way to showcase color. Of course, to be fair, Sarnoff had a bundle tied up in color, & by 1960, it wasn't exactly setting the world on fire-IIRC, RCA's bankers were beginning to grumble just a bit by then.

Sandy, I'd trade a hundred of today's globalist-manifesto-worshiping vulture capitalists for just one more Sarnoff. While he was ruthless toward his competitors, he had foresight and knew how to run an organization efficiently. I'm beginning to think that the NuVistor used in some color roundies was not so much a retreat by an old man from the transistor wars, but a way to make consumer bucks off of an excellent military-use design. Look how the marketing-phrase marvel New Vista sold the product! Maybe after the next depression, someone will come along and show the world once more how it's done the Sarnoff way!
