Damn Doug... you're loaded up over there!

Mine...

21" round color... 12
B/W console........ 6
B/W portable....... 14
color portable...... 1
Philco Predicta..... 1

34 sets total. Wasn't sure which catagory to put the Predicta in, and then decided it kinda needed a catagory of its own.

Guys- Gulp !!- I'm not worthy ! I'm not worthy ! I've only got about 2 dozen or so- lots of the little mid-80's Japanese hand-held sets. I DO have a '65 Zenith roundie, though, so I guess there's hope for me yet.-Sandy G.

Yes, the Admiral/Sony is an unusual set. The front of the set looks just like the Admiral picture on the photofact folder with a small volume/fine tuning knob between the channel knobs, the circuitry is the same, it uses Admiral tubes. It says "Sony" on the front panel. The set originally was a monitor/receiver, it has a switch for TV/line, but the previous owner removed the video/audio patch panel for some reason. The back cover says "Sony" and it has a long, 3-conductor power cord like the RCA monitor/receivers I have. Sorry I don't have a digital camera, so cannot provide photo.

I had a sony vtr with a re-badged admiral b/w tv/monitor from 1968, Thought it was odd that sony would do that. Maybe was something sony america only did?

Guys- I remember that oddball Sony color- There was a Sony distributor in Knoxville, & I cajoled my dad into taking me there a lot. But he liked looking at all the neat stuff, too. I remember seeing one of those one time back when I was 11 or 12, & I remember it because it was color & didn't "look" like a Sony. Seems like it was on a roll-around cart, & may have had an early VTR with it. I have one of the 1st Trinitrons, a '69 7" color that came from Hammacher-Schlemmer in NYC. I don't think Sony ever really officially imported it into the US. I'd give my eyeteeth to get it working again.-Sandy G.

My jaw is on the floor!! :jawdrop:
Looks like some of you guys could open up a museum. I'm totally jealous!
Not going to list the sets I own--I'd be too embarrassed. But how's about some pictures, fellas? Ya know, with the right marketing, a collection of pics could be turned into a nice coffee table book. I'd buy a copy. Maybe two, so I could keep one nice and drool all over the other.
Bob, who's wishing he'd bought a BIG house with a garage!

Black and White:

ANDREA 16" round metal cone CRT with FM radio. Purchased at the ETF swapmeet earlier this year. Restoration will be underway if I ever get time to get caps.

RCA 14" portable. Identical to one on Eric H's site, but has UHF. It will be restored eventually and rewired to solve the hot chassis problem. I need the correct SAMS for this. I have the version of the SAMS that used a transformer instead of AC/DC.

Sylvania 17" metal portable. Will be restored and rewired to fix hot chassis problem.

Stewart-Warner 12" round. Not at my current location, but will get here and be recapped. It had a fairly muddy picture last time I had it on.

Zenith 21" Late 50's metal table model. Works well, but will get a recap.

ROUND COLOR: All use the 21FJP22.

RCA CTC-16. Would have been totally recapped if I weren't laid off at the time. Need a CRT socket for this since somebody did a "Mickey Mouse" fix on the focus lead (wrapped it on pin 9 on the CRT... totally unacceptable). I did fix some other previous "repairs"). CRT is the original RCA with no cataracts.

Zenith 25MC32 (need to verify chassis number. The set is in Warren). Works like a charm. Replaced all filters and bad mylar caps in the vertical. A full recap wouldn't hurt.

Sylvania D-01. Worked last time I had it on. Will get a full recap eventually.

SILVERTONE TV,AM/FM, TURNTABLE combo. Works, but a full recap is in order. The filters are leaky and I think the voltage doubler needs to retire. The CRT was replaced (I still have the old one, it will get rebuilt eventually). The radio worked as found. The turntable is toast. Someone tried to fix it and screwed it up even more. The inrush limiter for the degauss was crumbled and the voltage dependent resistor is toast. The degausser is bypassed for now (I know...DUMB.)

OTHER:

RCA CTC-38. Found about a week before I relocated. CRT prognosis is uncertain. I have not tried the set yet. This one I have may have been one of the first to use the modern RCA logo.

I also have two of Zenith's first solid state sets. These are the ones where if the safety caps open, the HV triples and burns the neck off the CRT. Both have color problems which I haven't looked at yet.

RCA XL-100. Had a nice picture until the vertical crapped out. Something was smoking, but I don't have the right print for it. It will eventually be fixed.

RCA COLOR TUBE PORTABLE. 17 inch. This is similar to one mentioned in another thread where all caps and resistors (in the sweep section) had to be replaced. The CRT isn't great, but could look good with a proper restoration.

I'm always looking, but with my luck, one of my nosy neighbors might report me to the rental office, saying I'm running a repair shop out of my apartment. I'll eventually help fill the gallery.

As someone who is just getting into the hobby, my total is 11. At this point, my oldest would be from the mid 80's. Here is a breakdown by brand:

RCA--5
Citizen--2
JVC--1
Panasonic--1
Zenith--1
GE--1

One question for those of you who have mega numbers of sets: How many are in working condition, and how many are used with any frequency/regularity? As for myself, all sets are in working order with the exception of one RCA console which conked out just after the big blackout in August.

The sets I have in the house are almost all working and are hooked up to a private cable distribution system. Of about 25-30 sets in the house, only 3 are not working. I use a high-power MATV amplifier off of a VCR to feed the distribution line. The input is an outdoor antenna with pre-amp. Also I have a DVD player hooked up to the VCR and this allows me to watch videos on any of my TV's. I try to rotate the use of the TV's so they get somewhat equal use. Have not watched much recently, maybe 3 or 4 hours a week as there is not too much that's that interesting on antenna TV. I'm more interested in the technology of TV and in repairing them than a lot of the programming these days! The barn TV's almost all work, too, and are plugged in and can be turned on.

I was going to respond, strongly.

But with only 2 B/W and 5 color, I'm chump change.

(However, with a new Mit's 48413, and High Definition cable, I win!)

At least, in my own mind.

Doug,

You know that you have just raised the bar way too high for most of the rest of us slobs to match. :( I mean common, did'ja have to make that claim in public? ;)

Seriously, hats off to you brother!

Wow, there are some fine collections here eh!? I'll have to tabulate my own modest collection of mostly non-restored sets.

Hi Charlie, no they're not.
Currently there are only 39 sets listed on my site.

Some of the sets on my list are duplicates, some need finish work to be presentable, a very few are beyond repair, mostly tho I just haven't got around to photographing them yet.

bgadow,

Welcome to AK! I seem to recall seeing your monaker over at the other site. I haven't been there in a long time. There's plenty to keep my interest here. :)

That is a nice collection you have. Is that homemade kit TV from 1948 nice? Can you post more info and pics of any of your collection? It is really easy to do with the software AK uses.

Rob,
I have been waiting for a tube-type digital camera! No, really, I'm a cheapskate, so no pics to share-yet. Hopefully in the next few months I'll remedy that.

The Transvision is pretty neat, my wife's favorite, I think. The cabinet is sorta "Eames-like", makes heavy use of plywood, maple colored, I guess. Includes all the original plans. I feel guilty because I bought this several years ago at the Radioactivity auction for only $35.

I hardly ever watch tv, but nearly anything is worth watching on a well-tuned tube color set. Sometimes I just sit there dumbstruck!

This is a great site!

Rob

bgadow,

The Transvision is a great collectible! As for early tubed color TV's, I am constantly amazed at how well the clever engineers were able to make these work with so few tubes. If a tube equals a transistor, then the modern TV's would need hundreds of tubes to work!

Ok, here is the list of sets in the Dave A. collection in SE Pennsylvania in a very small house. They have all been gathered since 1985 when I decided that as a television director, I should pay attention to the history of what pays the mortgage…and my retirement. Not all have model #’s as they are buried and the numbers are not to be seen any time soon. NW=non working. W=working.

Col-R-Tel Color converter, W (not dedicated to a B&W set yet)
RCA TK-31 field B&W camera, modified for CCD image/LCD viewfinder, on loan to
Sarnoff Library in Princeton, NJ

If you noticed, most of the sets are unique for one reason or another. Having collected televisions since 1985 and radios since 1968, the one thing I learned is not to buy every/any set that came along. Old though they may be, not all of them are special. And I am allergic to vaporizing veneer and mundane mahogany. Slow and easy wins the race. The best thing any television collector can do is get very involved with your local radio club. The radio collectors want nothing to do with sets and will take pity on you and pass on all sorts of leads, not to mention hundreds of free tubes and parts that they do not want. I’ll post pix as I can find time to display the sets.

Stay tuned,
Dave A

I had a huge collection of old TV sets (all trash-day finds, of course) in the basement of my former home back in the early 1970s; gee, I wish I would have taken a picture or two of it (them) so I could scan it into my computer and show them off now, thirty-odd years later. I had just about every American make of television down there except Magnavox. I'd list them here, but I can't remember them all anymore.

My old neighborhood, near Cleveland, was also Zenith land, maybe not so much as drh4683's hometown, but a lot of my neighbors in my former hometown had Zenith consoles, portables, roundies . . . you name it, in the 50s and 60s. (I picked up one Zenith Space Command "300" portable--without the remote--in the late '70s and used it in my bedroom as my main set; it lasted only about a year before the horizontal-output tube went gassy and overbiased the RF amp in the tuner, not to mention the IF strip and AGC, so badly as to practically wipe out the picture.) I'm not saying we had more Zeniths than Doug's hometown had, but there were a lot of them out by the curb on trash day, every week, as the old sets developed serious problems or defective CRTs and were replaced by newer, and in some cases bigger, color sets. I once picked up a 23-inch Zenith b&w console which someone had filched all but one tube out of; I retubed that set (it still had a very strong 23ANP4 CRT, which produced a beautiful picture) and it worked, for three whole years. I even patched an FM tuner into the audio system to make a cheap-and-dirty mono hi-fi system (that set had a wonderful and great-sounding audio channel, with a 6BN6 quad detector and 6BQ5 output stage, not to mention a 6x9 oval speaker in the cabinet directly below the CRT). Then my dad remarried and we moved, which meant getting rid of all but two of those nice old TVs I had in our basement :( including my pride and joy 23-inch Zenith, which I had so lovingly rebuilt from the ground up over the course of a year. There were so many old TVs being put out for the trash each week before we moved that I swear, my neighbors must have thought we were running a TV repair shop out of the basement! :jawdrop:

Good luck, guys, and very kind regards, as always.

I wonder just how big Big Dave's apartment is. It must be huge, if he can fit all those old TVs in there and still have room to move around. I also live in an apartment, but mine is very small (one bedroom, with the main part of the apartment being one large room). I couldn't begin to amass a TV collection anywhere near as big as BD's is. The best I can do here is to have my two old Zenith radios in my place, but when I got my new one I had to stick my first ebay find in a closet (my apartment only has one closet, in my bedroom). I am pretty much out of space now, so collecting old TVs is completely out of the question anymore (although I did have half the basement of my former home full of old sets, but that was over 30 years ago).

BD has a valid point about his neighbors possibly reporting him to the rental office or landlord, as most apartment managers take a dim view of their tenants using apartments for anything other than living space. I don't envy him his collection, however, because it will be a big job getting all those old sets out of there if and when he moves again. Believe me, I know. When I moved from my former home 31 years ago (years before moving to where I live now), I had to get rid of all but two of the old sets I had in the basement of that house. My neighbors must have thought I was running a TV shop out of my basement when they saw TVs on the tree lawn in front of the house, every week for about a month before I moved.

Most of my sets are in my mother's basement, in another city. The sets I posted in the gallery (except two, I'll get to that later) are recent finds. I have a 2 bedroom apartment. The living room is large enough for my smaller sets (the Silvertone combo will stay in Warren until I can buy a house (fat chance of that). If I arrange things just right, I could have room for my entire collection, plus audio rack system (HH Scott tube amp).

Currently on the bench (table) is a 17" Sylvania 17P12 series.
After bringing it up, the filters and voltage doubler were warm. I replaced the evil selenium diodes before I did anything else. I'll order caps this week.

My after Thanksgiving set will be my RCA CTC-16. The cabinet isn't the greatest, but will still make a nice display when done and working. It has an original RCA CRT without cataracts and with good emission.

My goal is to get at least three sets done before the company Christmas party. I hope to display them there.

As far as sets I didn't post pics of go, I forgot to make a vidcap of the Sylvania. The cabinet is metal and the paint is in good shape. The name badge and tuner knob are gone, and the antenna assambly is broken beyond repair. I have a Philco 12" roundie which I bought at an antique flea market in Columbus. Some idiot broke the CRT. After the vendor figured out a TV with a broken CRT would not go for $45, they finally took 20 off the price and I gave it a new home. This will be started sometime next year. I need to find a 12LP4.

As far as the worst case senario goes (someone accusing me of running a TV shop out of my apartment, they better have evidence and be ready to show me. If they don't, they get nice bad publicity (I'll go to the media and my attorney). There are other ways around it, and hopefully nothing will happen.

wa2ise,

I just saw the TVs on your website. Very nice collection of older and vintage sets. However, I wonder--how on earth did you get the superimposed "NY" symbol (which is the logo of the New York Yankees) which you used to spell the name of the former mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani? I never saw anything like that before, and to be honest, I did a double take the first time I saw it. Very clever!

BTW, I recognize the set you put that logo under. It's an RCA ColorTrak 2000, if I remember correctly. Haven't seen one of those in years (in advertisements, etc.), and I've never seen one up close. Were they very popular or just a limited edition (like the RCA G-2000, of which only 2,000 production models were made)?

Speaking of ColorTrak, just what was the purpose of that system? Is it still being incorporated in the design of RCA tube TVs 19 inches and up? I have an XL-100 19-inch set, bought new in 1999, with automatic color, automatic contrast and color tracking, and black-stretch/black-lock circuits. Is the automatic contrast/color tracking system anything like ColorTrak? If not, what are the differences?

Thanks and 73,

wa2ise

Jeffhs,

The NY Yankees symbol is just that. I copied it off a baseball web page image file and pasted it into the picture with the RCA colortrack TV. That set was pretty common, RCA made many of them. It featured a comb filter. Also the chroma would track the contrast knob, and there was a room light photocell to sense ambient light and when you turned off the lights at night, the TV would lower the contrast and brightness automatically. This TV also has DC restoration. IIRC (I used to work at the RCA R&D lab in Princeton, these were all Colortrack features). I had to service this TV a few times, a few years ago a connector inside the tuner needed resoldering, and recently the flyback transformer lugs needed to be resoldered to the main circuit board. And I had to tweak a sound trap coil in the IF to get rid of sound/chroma subcarrier beat notes in the picture.

Cutting back a little. I've got 4, a couple of which actually qualify as vintage, maybe:

- A Panasonic 19" tube set from 1971 that kinda works
- The marvelous 1983-vintage Zenith 19" System 3 with Space Command and Space Phone that I bought new off the showroom floor earlier this year
- a 38" RCA HD set with built-in DirecTV
- My trusty ol' 27" ProScan that I recently got back from a guy who bought it from the guy I originally sold it to a couple years ago.

The late '80s 20" Trinitron and 26" Colortrak console have found other homes.

All I have so far are two RCA 8TS30 clones, the Dewald BT100 and the Air King A1000. These I will be selling soon, less the CRTs, unless I get both sets fully restored.

I also have a genuine RCA 630TS made in 1946, and a Genuine RCA CTC9 "The Felton", made in 1959. I have my trusty 20" Sony Wega as my main TV.

At my high point; circa 1988, I had around 275 sets in my collection. Categorized as 80% early postwar 7, 10, 12, 16, & 19 inch round-tube B&W, 10% early color (15", 19" CBS tube, and 21AXP22 varieties). 10% "other". Now I have fewer than a dozen TV sets, but also other non-TV-related collections PLUS a girlfriend with a horse... That costs more to keep up than a TV collection though... Shoulda kept it as it was :nutz: .........No, I'm happier now!

The bulk of my collection is still together, divided mainly between two other SoCal collectors.

1 50s GE portable (B/W)
1 Panasonic 70s 9" portable (B/W)

1 13" color Zenith from 1979(looks older from early 70s) and was cheap & Zenith!
1 17" 70s Trinitron (was bigger screen and cheap, so got it.)

I used to have more early B/W sets that worked, but no one wanted to watch them in my house since B/W- --pretty much gave them away. The B/W ones I have now just watch the daily news or blogs on them to keep active. I'm done collecting TVs as not allowed anymore...

I am married. I have two children. They are currently counting my collection and know better than me, how many sets are in our house. Since a collector offered me thousands of Euro for one of the German color sets, my wife is keeping space on the attic for opportunities of getting rare sets.

On Dec. 6th I had my first exhibition. Here are some photos:

1978 Sharp
1981 RCA
1985 Magnavox
1990 Sears
1996 GE
1997 GE 27" (daily watcher)

My goal is to have only as many TVs as I can use. I like to have every TV fully resotred, plugged in and connected to a cable box. Even if I have several TVs in one room, I like to be able to turn on any one of them to watch. Right now I have a cable box with volume/mute feeding a splitter to several sets in the living room that I use every day. Remote volume is a MUST with all the ads on TV. I should connect an RF modulator to my DVD player so I can watch DVDs on them.

That is my goal as well, as many TVs as possible :D I bought 3 8 output distribution amplifier and have all of them connected through a DVD/VHS combo unit. Pretty cool to watch them all at once, but the room gets very hot fast

How many sets? I have no idea. I lost track 6 years ago. :) I think it's in excess of 200 - 300 or so give or take a few dozen now. My wife claims (she's rarely wrong about most common sense things) that I'll probably never spend time with all of them. I remind her that collecting TV's is not common sense for most people and while I may never be able to spent time with all of them - I'll be thinking about all of them. Of course, I let her win the argument then give her some money to buy something for herself. :smlove: This usually works and leaves me to practice my eccentric art. Some of the more memorable sets include an RCA CT-100, CTC-4, CTC-9, CTC-11, CTC-12 color sets, including an early RCA roundie stereo console. Early B&W projection sets, and several Dumonts (including one that uses a CBS color wheel adaptor). I'm also fascinated by my early Japanese colors including a vintage Toshiba with the strange CRT (21FB gun on a japanese glass bottle). I have an Indextron and (just tonight) acquired the infamous KV-3000R. I wish I could get a Chromatron for my collection - now that would be cool...!

Then, of course, did I forget to mention, there's the antique audio and radio collections...mostly RCA, Zenith, Philco, Silvertone, Scott Radio, Marantz, and Grundig. Then there's the communications receivers and transmitters (both civilian and military) with Collins, Hallicrafters, Hammarlund, Scott, Heathkit, Yaesu, Drake, etc.

Ha...even my daily ride is almost on the endangered list...just a couple of years to go before my caddidily hopper gets historic vehicle plates! :zoom:

And doesn't your truck still run on that crap they call "gasoline" that so many suckers still think they have to use??? :nono:

Main thing of this post: Congratulations on the KV-3000!!!!! I am VERY pleased that you got it, as I know it will be preserved in good hands.. (I sent you an eMail on this)...

How many? I don't know for sure, but probably 200+. Many Predictas-est. 50. Dozens of early b/w. Early color, including the CBS 1954 205 set, many RCA and Zenith early color. One odd set is the Sony "Elvis" set whereby one cabinet houses 3 B/W solid-state 12" sets. I'm started a type of inventory whereby I place the Sam's (or other service info) into a 3 ring notebook binder. Besides helping keep track of what I have, the service information for each set is ready at hand. Just had a 60' X 30' metal bldg. built just for the TV and radio collection-storage, workbench, and display. The bldg. features a floored loft-with an electro-mechanical hoist-for additional storage space.

I have only one other TV here besides my daily watcher RCA CTC185. The other set is a ten-year-old Zenith SMS1917SG Sentry 2 19" in my bedroom, which will replace the RCA if anything happens to the latter. The Zenith works amazingly well for having ten years on it; original CRT and a great picture on cable here in my small town. In fact, I think my Zenith set has a better picture than the RCA. I've been tempted more than once to put the Zenith in the living room and use the CTC185 RCA as the standby set, but the RCA has such a good picture in its own right I can't bring myself to do it just yet. I think I'll wait until the RCA dies before I do that. However, the RCA has worked like a champ the last six years and continues to do so, so I may be waiting a little while yet before putting the Sentry 2 into daily watcher service again (that set was my daily watcher for four years in the mid-'90s--1995 to 1999; it worked well then and still does to this day--that's Zenith quality for you).

BTW, to Truetone36, I know the feeling of having to leave old TVs behind when moving. In the late '60s to 1972 I had a nice collection of old sets in the basement of my former home, then I moved (the first time) and had to get rid of all but three of them. Six years ago I moved again, within the same area (from a suburb of Cleveland to a village about ten miles outside the metropolitan area), this time to a small apartment (where I live now). No room for old TVs here, but I do have a small collection of vintage tube and transistor radios.

When I see an old TV set on the curb here I am tempted to grab it (if it's a portable--I saw a 1980s-vintage RCA 12" b&w portable not far from my apartment about three years ago), but then I remember the fact that there's just no room here for any more large sets. I like Zenith TVs and radios (I like the quality of the older ones, but cannot abide the Zenith-branded LGs), so maybe if I can find a small set of that make, say a 5" Zenith portable with AM/FM radio (on ebay, for instance), I might bid on it. I saw one of these on the bay last year and wish I'd have latched on to it, but there will be others, I'm sure.

I can now add to my list. I bought an old hi-fi console yesterday and when I went to pick it up last night, I saw that the guy had 2 old t.v.s in the garage. I asked about them, and he gave them to me!! I now have 2 WORKING CTC-5's, as well as the sets listed above.

I'll post sime pictures when I get a digital camera, I haven't bought one yet. These two sets had been daily watchers until about 2 years ago. I was beginning to think that there weren't any good sets in this area, and then the CTC-5's popped up. That really got my blood flowing and now I'm very actively looking for more. I'm hoping to someday find a Dumont Royal Soveriegn 30" b/w console, in the meantime, there's no telling what goodies will turn up. People in this area for the most part, didn't throw large purchases they'd made like tv sets, mostly those sets ended up in basements and sheds. The really cool thing is that I'm the first one in this town that has ever shown interest in them.

What make are the two TVs you mentioned? I for one will be waiting to see pictures of them.

I also live in a small town (in a small two-story apartment building on the main street) where old TVs don't show up on the curbs very often. I've lived here six years and have seen a couple sets (a late-'70s RCA color console and a 1980s-vintage RCA portable several years ago, not to mention two stereo consoles just up the street from me last summer), but frankly, old sets aren't as plentiful here as they were (and may still be) in my hometown. There are quite a few folks here who have lived in town some 50 years or more and grew up here; it wouldn't surprise me if they, too, hold on to their old TVs rather than throwing them out, even if the sets work poorly or not at all. My grandmother was something like that; she had a late-1940s Silvertone radio/phono combo she kept until some time in the very early '70s, and a 1950 General Electric 16" b&w console TV she had until she got a color set in 1971.

Good sets are everywhere around you, in the cellars, on the attics, in the barns and so on. We and you don't know where they are until we / you find them. Here in the Braunschweig aerea, appr. 400,000 people live. In the last year I got a
- Telefunken PALcolor 708 from 1967 (attic),
- Telefunken Palcromat from 1967 (attic),
- a Saba color from 1967 (attic),
- a Philips TD1410U from 1952 (attic),
- a Telefunken PALcolor 740 from 1969 (cellar).
- a second Telefunken PALcolor 708 from 1967 I got from a retired post serviceman near Aachen, who telephoned me.
Two of these sets were from people which find them while cleaning the house. Four of these sets were offered to me after reports about my tv collection in the local newspaper.
I think, even rare vintage sets are everywhere, more than we might expect.

I would agree...there are many old homes with an old tv hidden away somewhere. It is now just a game of finding them before the dumpster does. I think what too often happens is that the people charged with cleaning out old houses feel that these old sets are worthless so they don't even make an effort. I suggest that we all continue to keep up the search because you never know where a tv will show up...or what connection will bring it to you.

drh4683
01-29-2006, 11:31 AM
I agree with bryan all the way. This is a reason why we dont even see old 1960's-early 70's tube type color (or b/w) tvs on ebay. Owners think they are so useless that they are not even worth the effort to put on ebay. Estate sales are my ONLY hope to find these sets. I even miss many old sets at estate sales because the family threw out the old TV's before the sale. I run into this ALL THE TIME! Even when you do find an old set, the people are surprized and you always get the "what are you going to do with it" question. or you get "Im glad we saved it for the sale, we didnt think it was going to sell".

As far as ebay goes, I think the last time I ever saw a nice 23" tube type zenith color table set was 4 or 5 years ago. I have not seen anything since! Ebay almost seems like lost hope for finding 60's table sets, but the roundies still show up from time to time because they are so different, people think they are worth something (sometimes!)
my advice: Always check your local estate sales when ever possible!

Chad Hauris
01-29-2006, 03:03 PM
With Estate sales, it helps if the vendors are nice people who deal fair...there are several in this area who know we like TV's and electronic equipment and they won't throw it out and will advise us when there is a sale which has it.
If you go to garage sales you might just inquire if they have old TV's even if you don't see any out for sale.

Slightly off topic for this forum, but right on regarding "don't assume anything":

I went to an auction a few years ago when a production company was closing up shop. Conspicuously absent from the list of lots was an Ampex 350 studio console tape deck sitting forlornly over in the corner, covered with dust. When I asked about it, I was told "Oh, that doesn't work any more." At my request, they added it to the auction and, silly me, I was the only one interested at the opening bid of five dollars :)

From then on, I ALWAYS ask!

I got 11 console TVs (5 of which are big ones with radio+phono) and 3 console radios all stuffed in a 1 bedroom apartment, I use the tops of the consoles to put all my portable/table-top sets. In my closet you will find CRTs. In my kitchen cabinets, Sams. In my desk drawers, tubes and caps. ...

As I was wondering last night how many working round color sets are there out there, then I started wondering about old sets in general, so I figured I would start this thread up again.

color rectangular:

1975 Zenith 19" chromacolor II plastic cabinet - remote (SC 600) - working
1968 Zenith 21" metal cabinet - working
1967 Zenith 25" console - working

color round:

1963 Philco combo -working
1961 RCA CTC-10 console - remote - not working (but CRT tests good)

B&W:

1970 Zenith 23" metal cabinet - working
1961 Zenith 19" metal cabinet - working
1961 Zenith 23" console - working
1960 Zenith 17" metal cabinet - remote (SC 300) - working
1960 Zenith 21" console - working
1959 Magnavox 24" combo - working
1958 Sylvania 17" metal cabinet - not working
1956 RCA 8" metal cabinet - not working
1954 Westinghouse 21" metal/wood console - working
1951 Motorola 17" bakelite cabinet - not working
1951 Teletone 14" bakelite cabinet - not working

b/w round:

1950 DuMont RA112 19" console - not working (but 19AP4 metal CRT tests good)
1949 Hoffman 610 10" - working
1949 RCA T-100 10" - not-working
1949 Motorola 8" electrostatic - not working
1948 Hallicrafters 12" - not working
1948 GE 10" - not working
1948 Motorola TS-4J 7" electrostatic x4 (but I really only have enough parts between them to make 2 complete sets)
1947 RCA 721TS 10" (ch-1) not-working
1946 RCA 630TS 10" (ch-1) not-working

As you can see I've got a lot of sets that need fixing...
26 sets total, I just went back and looked at my first post in this thread, only 5 of the sets I have now are part of the original 21 I started with then. I probably reached my all time high with nearly 50 sets at the beginning of last summer, but I've sold/parted a lot of sets since then.

I don't know how you guys manage with such large collections, especially the one who said he has 12 color roundies. My modest vintage TV lot is as follows:

(1) Zenith 25MC33 Color Roundie 1965 (working)
(1) Motorola 9VT1 B&W Roundie 1949 (was working-restored chassis but needs ballast tube)
(1) RCA 8" Personal Portable, 1956 grey cabinet version without stand and antennas (restored and working)
(1) Quasar 12" B&W Solid State 1978 (like new but has horizontal hold problem)
(5) 5" Portable B&W Sets (3 with am/fm radio)
(1) Sony Watchman FD-42A 4" Flat CRT B&W Portable

My lot of vintage radios, tube and transistor is larger still.

I'm a small time player compared to those of you with over 200 TVs.

From oldest to newest:

Late 40's RCA 8T-243 10" tabletop

1950 RCA TC127 12" console- my first full restored roundie, I love it in the living room

Early 50's Tabletops:

Sparton 5325-A (indesructable, working original, unbelievable!!)

Motorola 17T13 and 17T8 17" one is bakelite, and one is wood. The bakelight is another working original.

Mid to late 50's sets:

1956 Philco 4136 21" Tabletop-another indestuctable, working original!

1955 or so Magnavox CTA992AA 21" console (current flyback project)

1959 Zenith Space Command 24" 18c24Q chassis (any takers? recapped! Still doesent work but looks as if it were hardly ever used. Pissed me off!)

Newer Stuff:

Early 70's hybrid 19" Sears tabletop Model 5284188521. It was too cool to let go to the landfill, plus it worked fine. INSTA VIEW-always unlpug!!

1984 Sears 27" remote control console. Not really a collectable but here is another super set. We bought this set in 1884 and it served perfectly with no service until late last year. Still plays like new intil the picture goes kind of blurry after 15 minutes or so. This newer solid state stuff isnt really my in my knowledge base so I have to decide if I should take to the shop or scrap. My Dad who bought it says move on and get a new one. I tell him I would rather attemt repair a set that has seved flawlesly for 23 years than buy one of these palstic China made tirds that might last 5 or 6 years.

Early 80's Panasonic 19" tabletop-superb utility set-any room-any time

1993 Zenith 19" remote, stereo, tabletop- my current daily workhorse on top of the beloved but sick Sears family heirloom

Emerson Model VR35 TV/FM/AM/PSB- this is one of those carry along battery jobs with maybe a 4" b&w crt. Bought for Winter power outages

The most I've ever had at one time was 30. Since the move about 9 years ago I have gotten rid of most of them. Here's what remains:

Great to see these collection lists. Hard to believe its been nearly 3 years since I started this thread. My collection has grown considerably since then and my open space has gotten considerably smaller..... Heres my updated list, including b/w sets. Brief description of the TV screen size, type and if equipped with remote control and chassis model. 93 total vintage TV's including 2 complete parts TV's at the bottom of the list.

Current collection stats:

25 total b/w TV's

68 total color TV's

56 of the 93 TV's are Zenith (60%)

26 of the 93 TV's are RCA (28%)

12% other brands, including motorola, sears, admiral, GE, Philco.

The mean average of the TV's in my collection is from 1968

There is a tie for the mode year of the collection, 1968 and 1973, 12 TV's from '68 and 12 TV's from '73.

My best count: 15.

"daily watchers"
2005 Sylvania (Funai) 6427GFF 27" digital color CRT "SPC".
Circa 1996 Daewoo 19" color CRT "BPC".
1987 Sharp 25" color table model faux woodgrain plastic (mechanical tuning).
1996 Zenith 13" color CRT "BPC" (remote, recent $6 acquisition).
2000 Action 5" B&W battery portable with radio (used in tandem with Zinwell DTV converter box and battery pack)
"De-facto TV" (Gateway 21" color CRT monitor + RCA HD tuner + Sony boom box).

Not "daily watchers"
Circa 1958 Emerson 1224 24" B&W consolette, blond (works - not perfectly).
(My favorite, I bought it used about 30 years ago and have made many repairs and tweaks).
1956 Motorola 21T34BA 21" B&W, blond table model (does not work - AGC problem)
Circa 1958 Zenith 17B20 21" B&W, faux mahogany table model (works)
Circa 1973 Zenith 14B38 19" B&W faux wood plastic portable (works, not perfectly)
Circa 1980 Sanyo 12" B&W, coffee plastic (works, missing volume knob)
Circa 1988 Zenith 12" B&W, faux wood plastic (banished to attic since 1996 color acquired)
Two 5" B&W battery portables (recently purchased for $1)
Sears 5" color AC/DC (works in AC, unknown model, boilerplate missing, only have AC cord and do not know how to connect for DC)

Leaving just enough room (and only enough room) for:
a color roundie.
